GB Boxing has announced the five men and three women boxers who will compete at the last Olympic qualifying event in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 25 to June 2.
The squad includes Savannah Stubley, Elise Glynn, Kiaran MacDonald, Owain Harris, Patris Mughalzai and Lewis Richardson, all of whom competed at the Olympic qualifier in March in Busto Arsizio, Italy, but failed to secure a slot for the Paris Games this summer.
These six boxers will be joined by Ramtin Musah (light-heavyweight, 80kg) and Amy Broadhurst (lightweight, 60kg), who recently joined the GB Boxing squad, having previously competed for Ireland.
Broadhurst impressed the coaches at a recent multi-nation training camp in Colorado, USA. She won the 2022 World and European championships at light-welterweight (63kg) and went on to take gold at that summer’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in her favoured lightweight (60kg) division.
“Selection for the final Olympic qualifying events is always very difficult and it is very disappointing for those boxers that have not quite made it. There were some very close calls when it came to selecting the eight for the final qualifier, but having analysed the form, fitness and track record of all the candidates, we have chosen the boxers that we think have the best chance of being successful in Thailand and securing a place at the Olympic Games,” said GB Boxing’s Performance Director, Rob McCracken.
The eight selected boxers and the support team of GB Boxing will fly to a training camp in Thailand on May 11 to acclimatise before the qualifiers begin two weeks later.
Up to 51 slots at Paris 2024 are available at the event in Thailand, which will feature male and female boxers from around the world. It is being organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and is officially known as the ‘2nd World Qualification Tournament’.
It is the final opportunity for boxers to secure a place at the Paris Games after last summer’s Europe Qualification Tournament at The European Games in Krakow, Poland, and the 1st World Qualification Tournament in Italy in March 2024.
So far, five boxers of GB Boxing have secured Olympic slots:
- Charley Davison (women’s 54kg)
- Rosie Eccles (women’s 66kg)
- Chantelle Reid (women’s 75kg)
- Patrick Brown (men’s 92kg)
- Delicious Orie (men’s 92kg+)
Cindy Ngamba, who is a ‘sparring partner’ to the GB Boxing squad and competes for the IOC Refugee Team, has also secured qualification in the women’s middleweight (75kg) division.
