Three British boxers have been eliminated so far from the ongoing Paris Olympics, with two suffering controversial split-decision defeats in their opening rounds.

Rosie Eccles was left in tears after a controversial defeat to Poland’s Aneta Rygielska that she said “really shocked” her.

The Welsh boxer, who missed Tokyo 2020 through illness and injury, was eliminated from the women’s 66 kg division by a 3-2 split decision that drew boos and jeers from the public.

Rygielska had a point deducted for holding and the Canadian judge gave the contest to Eccles by a four-point margin.

“A boxer knows when they have won a fight,” Eccles said ringside as she fought back the tears. “I knew I had won the fight so I am really, really shocked. It feels like I am in a dream right now, but not a great one.

The 26-year-old’s defeat came less than 24 hours after her Team GB colleague Charley Davison suffered a controversial point’s defeat to Turkey’s Hatice Akbas in an opening bantamweight contest.

On Sunday, compatriot Patrick Brown lost in the round of 16 by Brazil’s Keno Machado.

Three British boxers still remain in the competition at Paris: Delicious Orie, Lewis Richardson and Chantelle Reid.

Elsewhere, Samoan boxer Ato Plodzicki-Faoagali lost his bout against Victor Schelstraete of Belgium. Faoagali’s coach Lionel Fatu Elika had died of a heart attack on Friday, just hours before the opening ceremony, and all eyes were on Faoagali as he faced his Olympic hurdle 48 hours later.

23 preliminary bouts were held on the second day of competition at the North Paris Arena.
